Founded in 1959, Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources is a comprehensive nonprofit research institute for oceanography, engaging in basic marine research, applied research, and high-tech research. TIO houses the national deep-sea microbial resource bank with a collection of 45000 strains, which is the world’s largest marine microbial bank. We have also launched deep research on the genetic diversity, systematic evolution, and metabolic mechanisms of deep-sea organisms, in order to achieve strategic reserve and sustainable utilization of bioresources.
